Introducing our new service: McKenzie Friends – who are they and how can they help you?
At Milne Moser Solicitors, we recognise that traditional solicitor-led advocacy services may not be an option for everyone. Sometimes, you may just need a helping hand to navigate the complexities of the legal system or to prepare for court hearings – which may not necessarily need the involvement of a solicitor.
What is a McKenzie Friend?
The name ‘McKenzie Friend’ originated from the case McKenzie v McKenzie [1971], a divorce case, where the husband obtained the support from his friend, an Australian barrister, during proceedings.
A McKenzie Friend is a layperson – not a solicitor or barrister – who offers support, guidance, and practical help both inside and outside of court. While they can’t speak on your behalf during court proceedings, they can sit beside you, take notes, organise your paperwork, and help you stay calm and focused.
Leading up to court hearings, a McKenzie Friend can also help you to prepare documents, give advice and guidance on court procedures and legal options, as well as provide emotional support during such challenging times.
A McKenzie Friend can be a more affordable solution when you have complex legal proceedings to navigate, but don’t have the financial resources to have a solicitor guide you all the way through the process. Milne Moser can provide solicitor advice and McKenzie Friend services.
Being strong doesn’t mean doing it alone. If you feel like you would benefit from a McKenzie Friend, or would like to know more information about our services, please contact Milne Moser Solicitors on 01539 729786 or at solicitors@milnemoser.co.uk
